Pathfinder Powerboat Club Events overview

The following notes are provided to give members an overview of typical PPC events organised for the boating season.

Just a quick note to explain the term “lite” event. The events noted as Lite are intended to be informal get together’s without the need for lots of planning on the part of the person named as the coordinator. These events will purely be intended as get togethers, with each skipper making all his/her own arrangements to get to the rendezvous and any associated chart work and or overnight berthing arrangements. On these events the coordinators are just “points of contact” to provide some assistance by phone to any member that needs further information. NO briefing notes will be issued for these “Lite” events.

Other events will have the usual set of briefing notes, although they will be simplified with most of the standard things being on standard notes with just the important event data being produced on a front sheet or two.

Spring Social

This is the first event of the season. It is a social event to be held on the South coast. The intention is to arrange a visit to an interesting nautical venue and a pleasant lunch in a local pub/restaurant.
Solent shakedown

All welcome.

For many members this is the first trip out on the water for the start of the boating season. We intend to treat one of the days as a shake down to let everyone get their boats up and running and iron out any winter gremlins!

Members are welcome to join for one, some or all days over the weekend.

Also, we will have a number of members who are also RYA Powerboat qualified instructors, available on the day to assist members that may wish to have some early season advice on matters such as boat handling, chart work, tides etc.

Usually one of the days over the weekend will be left for a short run across or down the Solent for a nice lunch somewhere.

The Saturday evening would normally include a club meal at one of the local hostelries!!

Poole and Western Solent

All welcome.

This event is usually planned over a bank holiday. A lovely mid distance cruise starting from the Solent running down to the West, past The Needles and on to the picturesque harbour of Poole, with attractive beaches and anchorages en route. Staying at the Marina on the Town Quay, plenty of opportunity to explore Poole and the shops! PPC will have an evening meal on one or both days if crews wish to stay in Poole for 2 nights. There are plenty of B&B and Hotels in the area within easy walking distance from the marina, for those in open boats.

If the event is planned on a bank holiday then the return to The Solent will be on the Monday (although some crews may wish to return on the Sunday).
PPC Lite Port Solent & Round the Isle of Wight (RIW)

All welcome.

Informal gathering at Port Solent where there are plenty of shops in this marina located at the top of Portsmouth harbour. Possibility to meet up en-route for a spot of lunch at anchor at one of the bays in the Solent and then on through the historic harbour of Portsmouth where plenty of historic and modern war ships can be seen.

If there is sufficient interest, on the Sunday for those crews who are interested, the club plans to run clockwise around the Isle of Wight.
Brighton Cruise

All welcome (subject to weather and vessel suitability)

One of the few events where PPC ventures East of the Solent. This event is usually planned for a bank holiday weekend which will allow crews to enjoy an additional day exploring the delights of Brighton, only a short walk from the marina (or be lazy and take the seaside train!).

Brighton Marina (claimed to be the largest in the UK) has many shops, 10 pin bowling (maybe we should have a PPC match!), cinemas and you can even hire cycles to explore. There are Cafes and restaurants to enjoy and the club will arrange a club meal for at least one of the evenings that we plan to be there.
Thames cruise

All welcome.

This “lite” event is a new club event and will be gauged by the interest. The intention is to launch/gather in the lower reaches of the Thames and then cruise up the river through the Thames barrier and on to central London taking in all the landmarks on the way up. Plan to overnight at St Katherine’s Dock or Chelsea Harbour with the obligatory club meal Saturday evening. The plan for Sunday would be to continue a little further up the river to take in all the central London sites and landmarks (Houses of Parliament, London eye etc.) before the run home down river back to base.

PPC Lite Treasure hunt and East Cowes trip

All welcome

Another “lite” event with the addition of teaming up with those great guys at Southampton Dry stack (SDS) , to have a treasure hunt on the Saturday.

Details of the treasure hunt will be provided well before the event date. After the hunt, SDS will be laying on a BBQ. After that for those who wish to can run over to East Cowes for a leisurely stay over perhaps with a wiz across to West Cowes for the evening. Sunday will be as the crews wish!
PPC Lite Bembridge

All Welcome.

An informal meeting with a medium run from Southampton to the East of the Isle of Wight to the compact but pretty harbour at Bembridge. The winding channel into the harbour can be a bit of a challenge so make sure you time your arrival that gives you enough draft! With plenty of pubs and a couple of restaurants you will be spoilt for choice for an evening meal out.

BBQ & camping weekend – (Island Harbour)

All welcome.

This very popular event will follow the same format as previous years. A short run across the Solent from Southampton past Cowes, up the River Medina and on to Island Harbour Marina. Arrival will be timed to coincide with high water giving plenty of time for a walk up to the town of Newport with its many shops. Alternatively, a walk back down the river to the famous Folly Inn for a pre BBQ drink might be in order!!
If you are camping there is a large field in the Marina grounds overlooking the marina and surrounding countryside. BBQs will be lit late afternoon and the festivities will continue until the last one standing. This is a great family event.

PPC Lite Gosport

Everyone welcome

Another “lite” event with a shortish run east down the East Solent on to Gosport Marina. Gosport has plenty of shops and a market runs on Saturday. You won’t go hungry either as there are plenty of restaurants offering the whole range of cuisines.
Weymouth cruise and beyond

All welcome (subject to weather and vessel suitability)

This is usually a favourite, running every year, a 60 odd mile cruise to the fishing harbour/town of
Weymouth. Great scenery en route along the Jurassic coast line and loads of options for eating out. Stops along the way can include Studland , Lulworth cove, Chapman’s Pool, all lovely anchorages.

This event can be over 2 or 3 days depending on crews preferences, with the added option to go beyond Weymouth if anyone wishes. The outline plan is to cruise across Lyme Bay to Torquay/Brixham for a day or two and then return to The Solent with a stop over in Poole. Crews not wanting to do this leg of the trip can return to The Solent on either own.
PPC Lite Cowes

All welcome.

A short hop across the Solent to the popular destination Cowes. There will be plenty of time to meander around the character and charm of Cowes. Obligatory club meal in the evening at one of the many local hostelries!!
PPC Lite Chichester

All welcome.

A medium run east from Southampton water on to Chichester Harbour and then up the Chichester Channel to Chichester Marina. If your route takes you across Horse and Dean sand then ensure you take great care and use one of the buoyed positions when going across the submerged barrier that connects Horse Sand Fort to South Parade. Depending on your time of arrival (remember that access to Chichester Marina is not possible 1.5 hrs either side of LWS) time can be spent at anchor off East Head. There is a small shop in the Marina complex along with a bar/restaurant.
PPC Lite Lymington

All welcome

A gathering in the Western Solent, some may wish just to attend for the day others may wish to
stay over in Lymington.
Solent Nitex

All welcome- providing you have Nav lights!

Always an interesting event. An opportunity to refresh or start your skill of night time navigation with highly experienced organisers. The nitex will run on a Saturday afternoon and into the evening. Most boats will stay in the water overnight and that gives an option to have a short trip on the Sunday.

AGM and Social

This si the last event of the season. The AGM is held during the afternoon followed in the evening by a Dinner and Dance. Details of venue and timing will be published during the season.

The objective of the AGM is:
Ÿ
To ensure that the Club is organised and administered effectively
Ÿ
To keep members informed of the work of the Club’s committee
Ÿ
To give members a voice in running the Club
Ÿ
To enable elections to take place
